Is Dehydration Contributing To Your Back Pain?

How does dehydration contribute to back pain?

Well, the small discs that cushion the area between your vertebrae have a marshmallow-like texture and are filled with liquid. When the body is dehydrated, the amount of fluid in the discs decreases, causing them to shrink. As a result, there’s insufficient support left for the spine. The stress of this can cause swelling in your back, resulting in discomfort and potentially a herniated disc. We cannot, therefore, emphasise enough how important hydration is for your back pain and your body’s overall health.

How to stay hydrated

1. Drink electrolytes in addition to water when exercising.
2. Install an app on your phone to keep track of how much water you’re drinking.
3. If you don’t like water or find it boring to drink, add fresh mint or lemon juice to make it
tastier.
4. Eat fresh/raw fruits and vegetables which have a high water content
5. Keep an eye on the colour of your urine – the lighter, the better.
6. Get a reusable water bottle or one that keeps track of how many ounces you drink.
